MOULD & DAMP

WHY ARE MY WALLS MOULDY?

There could be a couple of things going on; not enough ventilation and a cold wall. In my experience the latter is the biggest culprit. Warm air circulating in a home hitting a cold wall due to lack of insulation will condensate and cause mould. Insulating a wall can remedy this by reducing the chance of that warm air condensating and in turn reducing the likelihood of mould occurring.

One route is cavity wall insulation. That's not my field, so what I can offer is to insulate the wall on the inside. This is done by fixing studs to the wall, fitting insulation (often referred to as Celotex) , plasterboard and skim.

DAMPROOFING

If you are experiencing rising or penetrating damp in your home I can offer a damp proofing service to effectively eradicate it.

There are so many opinions on rising damp, it can be overwhelming. All I can say is this is my approach, I've been using this method for a long time now and I know it works. I use a method known as mesh membrane. The damp plaster is removed anywhere between 1 - 1.5m from the floor (rising damp only rises so far before gravity pulls it down again) back to brick/stone and fix a thick, purpose made membrane with nodules to act as a small cavity (against the brick) and the front is meshed ready to take the plaster. It's fixed with plastic plugs (mushroom fixings) sealed and plastered. This method ensures any damp stays behind the membrane and the plaster remains dry. I prefer this method to tanking and injection methods as I like the physical separation of the surfaces.
